My Dad was stationed at Lackland after being at Iraklion during the Cuban Missile Crisis. My twin sister and I were born on Lackland AFB in March 1964. We are just recently learning a lot about his experience on Iraklion. He and my Uncle Gary (former Marine in VIetnam)often talk about thing that happened or occured during their time. We are blessed they both returned safely to us and still are here to share history with their grandchildren. The funniest thing is his story about carrying LBJ’s rocker off the plane and a secret service agent told him to stop or be stopped. He says he had to change his uniform after the run in. This site is really interesting and informative for my sisters and I. THanks
I went thru basic training starting in June, 1962 in the 3723rd BMTS. I don’t remember my Flight number(barracks). Gene Pitney had gone thru it a couple months before. Would like to hear from some of my old buddies.

I went through the 3723rd BMTS Flt 1603, Oct 61 - Dec 61. Our TI’s were TSgt Fleming and SSgt Hamparian, the area NCO was a TSgt Rodesta, the CO was a Capt. Wilson. I later went to med. school OSL (other side of Lackland) and then Brooks AFB for Flight Medicine…I retired in 1985 as an SMSgt. Coincidentally, I ran into TSgt Fleming at Orlando AFB and gave him his retirement physicial - every basic recruit’s dream…I have fond memories of that time - it was a great bunch of guys…
I went through basic training from Oct 1958 to Jan 1959. Anyone recall their DI’s. Sgt Thomas or Sgt Giordana>I served with Shepard,Mogidici,Prince and big Boone. Luke AFB was my next assignment at the BMP.

I am looking for my Dad’s picture from the USAF BMT. I can’t find it anywhere on the internet. bmtflightphotos.af.mil has one picture from May of 1963 but he is not in it. There has to be more from that year. I know his picture was taken in May of 1963 at Lackland in San Antonio. He remembers his drill sergeants name as Kerkluski (sp?) and Fletcher. Is anyone out there by any chance in the picture and have a copy or know of how I can find a copy? I do know my Father called the VA requesting a copy and they got back to him saying they don’t have a copy. Could that be possible? The only other way I can try to find this photo is that he said the picture was posted in the local newspaper, Centereach, NY. How do I go about looking through archives of a town paper from ’63? Can anyone help me? Thanks. 🙂
I would like to have a copy of the picture of the 3723rd, Flt 625. I was there from Nov. 4, 1958 to Dec 3rd, 1958. Anyone from those dates, please share any pics that you have from boot camp.

I hav made a couple of entries prior to this one and I think I made a mistake on my Flt. Number. I put Flt 625. I just found a set of orders with 3723/861. Sorry for the confusion’
Especially for Jerry O’Hara…I went thru basic at Lackland in June 1962. A know the AF Times had a pic on the front page of General Hopwood (or Hopgood) welcoming Gene Pitney to LAFB. So I am amazed to see he went thru basic in 1958, since the scuttlebutt was that he wanted to pull KP with the rest of us on Saturday mornings, but the officers made him sing at The Officers Club instead. I also heard that David Nelson was going thru basic at LAFB in June, 1962. Is this false also?
To: Bob Bainter,
I arrived at LAFB on Nov.4, 1958 and lefr for Chanute and Tech School on Dec.4,1958. I was in 3723rd flt 625 or Flt 861. I can’t remember for sure which one, but anyone in either ,I’d like to hear from you. Marshall Douglas
Liz, VA would not have a copy of that pic. I’m having the same problem. You may call that newspaper and get them to check their archives. give them full name, date of issue if possible. Good Luck. also, if he remembers any one that he was there with, do a people search. I’ve found several of my buddies like that.
I was in the 3723rd Flight 101 from January 20, 1960 to March, 1960, TI’s SSgt Forest T. Buckner III and Amn 3rd class Robert Sloan, TSgt Rodusta was their supervisor. Anyone who went thru basic under Buckner would never forget him..I never will!!
As a matter of fact our slogan was “Don’t forget to remember” ours was one of the last flights to do 11 weeks so I got to know him pretty well😳😳 went to Goodfellow after that for RIA and Printer RIA after that..
Exactly 56 years ago I was in Basic Training at Lackland AFB , SQDN 3710 , FLT ANG 38.
Gene Pitney was in the barracks bldg next door to where I was. I never met him but he made an agreement with the base commander that he would perform for the “troops” on base, on the 4th of July (today) in exchange for permission to get a short leave to do a previously contracted performance off base. Gene Pitney gave us a truly memorable show. He was one of the greats from this era.
